AUGUST QUICK TIPS

  • Though it hardly seems the time to be thinking of colds, fevers, and days missed from school, this is the perfect time to take note of your medicine cabinet. Anything you buy in August will be sure to come in handy during the winter months. Imagine, no stressful trips to the pharmacy with a sick kiddo in tow. First, grab your grocery list and a pen. Next, go through what you have and immediately toss anything expired. Write down what needs to be replaced on your grocery list. This ensures you will not forget to replace it. Someone home sick for a day or two can really throw a kink in your daily plans. Doesn't it sound like a great idea to have the over-the-counter medicines on hand that your family uses? Don't forget to stock up on tissue and throat lozenges too.

  • Devote a space in your refrigerator for lunch items that everyone can grab when they are packing their lunch. I use the Lazy Susan in our 24 year old refrigerator (that ugly white box will not die!) and I keep it stocked with string cheese, snack size hummus cups, fresh fruit and yogurt. The boys know to grab something from thre when they pack their lunches. Plus, when it is all in one area, it takes a quick glance to see what needs to be replaced.

  • On the note of packing lunches, I keep a snack basket in my pantry that I try to keep well stocked. Items such as dried fruit, pretzels, Kashi bars (our favorite), and nuts are great to toss into a lunch box too. This makes it easy to find something quickly since it's all contained in one area. I am a huge proponent of taking things out of their packaging the minute I return home from the store. I like recycling all of those cardboard boxes, and placing everything I purchased together into the basket. It looks good, but it functions better.

  • I had to share an extra tip this month. When you stop at a drive-thru and receive those extra packets of mustard, ketchup and mayo toss them into your pantry or cabinet where your family can see them. This brings an end to soggy sandwiches since these extra packets allows them to put their condiments on at school.
